Black Hills Fishing Report for November 7th 2013

Winter has set in early this year. It started off with a bang. The snowstorm of early October created lots of problems for area streams. Downed trees fell into much of Rapid Creek and Spearfish Creek. Extremely high flows followed the storm. However, things have improved markedly in the last couple of weeks. Many areas have been cleared within the city limits of Rapid City. Flows have come down to a very fishable level. Although they remain high for this time year, they offer great fishing opportunities. Nymphing and streamer fishing have been quite good. As Dave Gamet was quoted in the Rapid City Journal today, you just got to get out there. Fishing has been very good on Spearfish Creek in the Canyon. Some anglers have found success up on Castle creek. For the best results use bigger brighter nymphs such as San Juan worms and pink squirrels. Streamers have been working quite well. Don't be afraid to use very large streamers. High water hasn't taken away all opportunities for dry fly fishing. Warmer afternoons have found fish rising to baetis and midges in the slower sections of Rapid creek.
