Black Hills Fishing Report June 25th 2014

Fly fishing on Black Hills streams and lakes continues to be good. No major changes in stream flows over the past week. Streams remains slightly high but very fishable. One area that a shot back up and needs a few days to settle down is Rapid Creek just above Pactola Reservoir. Most streams are running clear and have provided good fishing. Streams that have been fishing the best include Rapid Creek, Castle Creek, Spearfish Creek, Spring Creek, Crow Creek, and Sand Creek. Other highlights have included the smaller streams of Hannah Creek, upper Spearfish Creek (along Hwy. 85) and upper Whitewood Creek. Fishing higher up on Rapid Creek above Rochford has also been quite good. Don't overlook the smaller waters, sometimes they hold some of the greatest treasures in the Black Hills fishing.

Black Hills Fishing - Stream Fishing Report

While some dry fly fishing opportunities have been available, fishing has been better with nymphs and streamers. The best dry fly action has been on Castle Creek below Deerfield, where caddis and small stoneflies are hatching. Caddis are also hatching on Rapid Creek through Rapid City and can provide some late evening action. Tricos started hatching this week on Spring Creek below Sheridan lake. As flows drop dry fly fishing will improved dramatically. As far as nymphing goes, getting down is the ticket. We are using tungsten weighted nymphs to make that happen. Tung-teasers, czech Nymphs, tungsten hares ears, and tungsten soft hackle pheasant tails have been the way to go. Hang a small dropper off these weighted flies to pick up extra fish.

Black Hills Fishing - Lake Fishing Report

Fishing has also been good on lakes in the Black Hills. If you're a float tuber or kayaker this is a great time to explore Sylvan Lake, Center Lake, and Deerfield Lake. Some of the other smaller lakes are fishing well but the aforementioned have been the best over the past week. Hatches of callibaetis mayflies and chironomids are bringing fish to the surface and provide great dry fly fishing.

Black Hills Fishing - Warwater Report

Warmwater fly fishing is picking up! Carp action is increasing on angostura and warm and reservoirs. Carp are eating cotton and terrestrial insects on the surface. Bass fishing is also good on local reservoirs. Target Smallmouth bass on angostura reservoir and Largemouth on Sheridan Lake. Bluegills are still biting in the coves and bays on Pactola reservoir.
