Warm weather is on the way, but abundant moisture early this summer has stream flows in excellent shape. High water is working it's way down, so just about all streams are in good fishing condition. Most fishing action has been focused on Spearfish, Castle, and Rapid Creeks, but we have had good luck and reports from Spring Creek as well as French Creek. As water levels drop we should see dry fly fishing pick up, its been primarily a nymphing game for the past month. Tricos, caddis, PMDs, and pale evening duns will all start to play a role. In addition, dry/dropper rigs with big attractor dries and hoppers will start to be the go to tactic.
Rapid Creek has the highest flows of the bunch right now but they are on the way down. Fishing will pick up all across the watershed as flows drop. Tricos will really be going strong in town in the morning along with caddis later in the day. Stick with nymphs and streamers now but be ready for dry fly fishing to really take off over the next week.
Spearfish Creek is dropping and is in great fishing shape. Good clear flows and nymphing has been solid here. Still need tungsten to get down in the current, but work the seams and pockets and you will find success. As flows continue to drop small droppers will start to work off of your heavier lead flies.
Castle Creek hasn't been seeing much pressure. Below Deerfield will be excellent. Good nymphing conditions, but hoppers and attractors will be really taking off. Fish a hopper or hippie stomper lead with a tungsten dropper for a great all purpose rig
Warmer weather will make some of the other streams early and late fisheries- Spring, Box Elder, and French Creek warm up more quickly than other streams. Don't count them out though. good flows will make these great bets and good places to find water to yourself. Early trico hatches and late evening caddis hatches will be worth seeking out. Nymphing and streamer fishing otherwise.
