Black Hills Fishing Report November 6th 2024

The weather is starting to cool down but there is still time to fish. We have gotten a few smaller storms in the Northern and Southern Hills which hopefully will help us with moisture. Top streams to fishing this time of year are Rapid Creek, Spearfish Creek, and Castle creek below Deerfield. Top lakes to fish are going to be Pactola, Center, Deerfield, and Sheridan Lakes will continue to be very productive for the next week.

Rapid Creek
Rapid Creek is fishing well in certain sections. This time of year with lower water conditions will limit some fishing locations. Upper Rapid Creek is flowing around 28 cfs and in town Rapid Creek is around 22 cfs. Our recommended spots to fish are from Founders Park up to Pactola and above Pactola.

Castle Creek

Flows are around to 10 cfs below Deerfield Dam. This section of water tends to have more spooky fish so, be aware of your shadows and have a slow approach to the stream. Fish are going to be in the deeper pockets of water.

Spearfish Creek
Spearfish Canyon still remains in good conditions with colder water temperatures, as well with fishing in town. In both sections of Spearfish Creek smaller midges, and tiny mayflies will hatch in the afternoons. Nymphing is going to be very effective, but if you still want the chance for a top water eat a dry-dropper rig will also work.

Lake Fishing

New Update- Center lake is fish excellent. Pactola and Sheridan Lakes are fishing well

Lake fishing across the Hills is still going strong. Sylvan Lake and Center Lake in Custer State Park are particularly productive. Fish are responding well to leeches patterns and chironomids. Go to rig for most lakes is an indicator rig with a balance leech. Drop leech 4-6' below the indicator. You can fish a chironomid and pheasant tail as an alternative rig to the leech pattern.

Top Flies -

Dry Flies- Parachute BWO 18-24, Baetis Size 20-24, Small midge patterns

Nymphs- Hot Tag Hares ear 14-18’s, Perdigons Blue or Green size 14-20, waltz worms, zebra midges, prince nymphs,

Streamers- Lil Kim, Slump Buster, Coffees Sparkle Minnow
