Collection: Red Fox Squirrel Nymph - Fly Tying Video & Materials
The Red Fox Squirrel Nymph has caught fish nearly everywhere I have been and is a staple in my box. I usually tie these in sizes 12-16. Use a bead if you like. The soft hackle seems to be important to this fly’s success. Some tiers omit the soft hackle but I would take the extra time to add one. The Red Fox Squirrel Nymph is an all purpose nymph that imitates stonefly nymphs, caddis fly larvae, and mayfly nymphs.
Dave Whitlock’s Red Fox Squirrel nymph is extremely versatile. It works for trout, but it can be adapted into patterns for smallmouth bass and carp.
