Tying Midges

Tying Midges

Hans Stephenson |

Midge Season is in full swing. Fill your boxes with some of our favorite midge patterns. While the standard zebra midge is always a good option, add some variety to your fly box with these midge larva patterns.

Not technically a midge, the black fly is an essential menu item for our Black Hills trout. Leave the tail off, and this pattern works just as well. The black fly larvae jig has been a top producer on our streams over the past several seasons.

The ginger wire on this midge adds depth and realism that makes it more convincing than a standard zebra midge.

The T-Midge is a great mix of materials: an iridescent body with the emerging wing, capped off with a glass bead. Tie this pattern in gray, olive, and black. Size 18-22
