Black Hills Fly Fishing Report March 27th

Spring is officially here! With warmer temperatures this week, we are noticing more dry fly action out on the water. Flows are still on the lower side this time of year. Hopefully, we will get some moisture this weekend and into next week. Areas are slowly opening up in the higher elevation areas, although in-town fishing is going to be more consistent. This is a great time to get outside and enjoy some fishing!

The best fishing at this time of year will be on Rapid Creek and Spearfish Creek.

Rapid Creek:

With warmer weather, the hatches have changed since the last report. We are noticing solid dry fly action between 10 am-2 pm. In the morning, throwing Midges, Sparkle Duns, Blue Winged Olives, and Morgan's Para Midge will be your best dries to throw. In the later afternoon, your best option is going to be nymphing. Certain nymphs to use will be San Juan Worm, Midge variations, Soft Hackle nymphs, and variations of Perdigons.

Spearfish Creek:

You will notice hatches similar to Rapid Creek. Some specific dries to throw will be Henryville Special, Black Caddis, and Parachute Caddis. Once the hatch starts to fade out, nymphing will be your best option. Throwing different color variations of Midges, Perdigons, Soft hackle, and Flashback Quill.

Lake Fishing:

The ice is coming off the lakes! Certain lakes to fish will be Pactola, Sheridan, and Center lake. Balanced Leeches under an indicator is a great technique for any lake in the Hills. Two other options will be a Thin Mint and a Red Analid under an indicator.
