Black Hills Fly Fishing Report February 22nd 2024

Warmer has hung around. The fishing conditions continue to be excellent for this time of year. Make the most of it! Cross your fingers we keep getting moisture as we get into spring and summer.

Best stream conditions will continue to be at lower elevations, however with the continued warm weather there will be more of the higher elevation streams opening up. We have primarily focused on Rapid Creek in Town and Spearfish Creek in town.

Dry fly fishing opportunities are inconsistent on Rapid Creek, likely on Spearfish Creek in town as well. We are seeing some midges hatching from 10 am to around 1 pm. However, we haven't had rising fish every day. Some days are good and the next day nothing. Either way it is good to get out.

We are primarily using size 20-22 midge patterns. Morgans Midges, Para Morgans, CDC Midges, and smaller griffith's gnats.

Nymphing and streamer fishing is good. Fish haven't seemed too picky. I have primarily used walts worms, green weenie midges, and some pheasant tail variants. If fishing slows, don't be afraid to drop tippet sizes and use smaller midge larvae patterns. Try to fish as slow and deep as possible.
