Black Hills Fishing Report June 9th 2013
Black Hills Fishing Report 6/9/13
Rapid Creek
In Town - Fishing is great, mostly with bigger nymphs such as size 10-16 UV Czechs, Pink Squirrels, Tung Teasers, North Forks, Tungsten San Juans, Dirty Politicians, Hot Spot PT's and Hare's Ears. Good Dropper flies are size 14-18 Psychos in black or olive, Tungsten Bruised Purples, Bubble Backs and Rainbow Warriors. Dry Fly fishing will get better with the increased clarity, with good BWO hatches, and Caddis and PMD's on the way, with a few Yellow Sallies in the next few weeks. Streamer fishing is also good, with Kreelexes, Sculpzillas, Home Invaders, and Zoo Cougars being the best bets, with a light sink tip or loop-on Versileader being key to getting your flies a little deeper.
Below Pactola - Fishing has been consistent, and with the flows being slightly bumped today, should improve. Small nymphs, as always, are your best bet. Lead flies that have been producing well are Tungsten San Juans, UV Czechs, Amexes, North Fork Specials, and Pink Squirrels. Good dropper flies are Rainbow Warriors, Bubble Back Midges, UV Midges, Zebra midges, Black Beauties, Tungsten Split Case BWO, and T. Ready Baetis. The BWO hatch has been good, with small 20-22 Sparkle Duns, Comparaduns, Brook's Sprout Emerger, and Vis a Duns producing a good number of the selective rising fish.
Silver City - Off Color, but slowly clearing up. Still, there is good fishing to be had. Big nymphs, such as size 8-14 Halfbacks, North Fork Specials, Red Fox Squirrels, Tungsten San Juans, UV Czechs, and Pink Squirrels. Streamer fishing with Kreelexes, Sculpzillas, Dungeons, Home Invaders, and the like are also producing good numbers of fish. Silver City will improve proportionally as the water clears up.
Spearfish Creek - Spearfish is coming down from flows of over 1000 cfs, and as this is written is at 129 cfs. So, this means that focusing on the edges with bigger nymphs such as Tungsten San Juans, UV Czechs, Pink Squirrels, Tung Teasers, Hare's Ears, and North Fork Specials will produce the best numbers until the water drops down to normal flows, which should be by the beginning of next week at the latest.
Spring Creek - Fishing well, focus on the bigger pools and deeper runs with size 12-16 Tung Teasers, North Fork Specials, Red Fox Squirrels, UV Czechs, Arizona Hares, and Pink Squirrels.
Lakes - Horse Thief, Sylvan, Center, Roubaix, and all of the other small lakes are fishing well with Mini Leeches, Wooly Buggers, and Sculpzilla's down under, and with Parachute Adams and Callibaetis Spinners fooling some of the rising fish.
