Black Hills Fishing Report for June 15th 2015

Fishing in the Black Hills has been quite good the past couple of weeks. We have had a bit of high water to work around, but there is good to great fishing to be had. Most of the rain has fallen in the central and southern Black Hills. The west and northern Black Hills have been the best bets for stream fishing. Currently the streams that are fishing best are Spearfish Creek, Castle Creek above and below Deerfield Reservoir, Crow Creek, and Sand Creek. Our best fishing has been with nymphs. However, dry fly fishing is picking up in the the upper parts of Spearfish Creek and below Deerfield Reservoir on Castle Creek. Blue Winged Olives are hatching on cloudy days in upper Spearfish Canyon. You will find Blue Winged Olive (Baetis) on Castle Creek as well. There have even been a few small stoneflies about. We've even had folks catching fish on terrestrials- including hoppers on Crow Creek and Castle Creek. Spearfish Creek Black Hills Rainbow Trout Fly Fishing Smaller lakes in the Black Hills have been fishing well too. If you're in the southern hills, try Center Lake. Fishing has been excellent on Center lake with small leech patterns. Callibaetis mayflies are starting to hatch too. Sylvan Lake is also fishing well. In the central hills Roubaix Lake is a good choice. We have also had luck in the ponds in and around Spearfish Canyon. There are some really nice fish in Yates Ponds. Try stripping a pheasant tail nymph over the weed beds to imitate a Callibaetis nymph- it works really well! Evenings and cloudy days will bring fish to the surface in Yates Ponds. Stop by the shop for the latest information on hatches and hot flies. Or give us a call to schedule a guided fishing trip! 605-341-2450
