Black Hills Fishing Report July 17th 2018
Weather conditions continue to be excellent for fishing. Good moisture and mostly cooler than average temperatures. While some streams are a touch high, overall these are extremely good fishing conditions for this point in the summer. Rapid, Castle, and Spearfish Creeks have stood out as the top fishing spots, but don't overlook some of the other streams- including Box Elder, French, and parts of Spring Creek. Caddis and Tricos are your best bets for fishable hatches- although the late afternoon yellow mayflies have started. Hoppers and other terrestrials are driving attractor style dry fly fishing. Dry dropper rigs are working really well in most parts of the Hills. If you want to focus on catching the most fish, then focus on nymphing. We are using tungsten style jig flies for the most part. These are exceptional at getting down in the swift current to where the fish are lying. Drop off a tungsten zebra midge if need be to fool the picky fish.
Lakes are a solid bet this year as well. Get out and fish Deerfield or even Sheridan (especially early and late). Center and Sylvan are fishing well in Custer State Park.
Warmwater fishing has been great on the prairie lakes and dams. Really good conditions out on the prairie for largemouth, panfish, and even pike! Break out the 8 weight and go throw some poppers.
