Black Hills Fishing Report January 9th 2014

Fishing has been relatively good so far this winter. Weather is the biggest obstacle to finding productive days on the water. So far this season has seen highly variable weather, so finding a good day can be the toughest problem. On days warmer than 32° fishing has been decent Rapid Creek. The best action has been in town, but it is worth making the trek up below Pactola Reservoir as well. Fishing in other Black Hills streams has been spotty and there have been few reports of good days on Spearfish or Castle Creek. Fishing is best with nymph patterns down deep. Best options have been a czech nymph followed by a midge dropper. Over the past few days red midge larva have been very productive. Another good dropper option is a green weenie midge. Dave tied up a bunch for the shop; come and get 'em while they're hot! January and February should bring midge hatches to Rapid Creek in town. Over the past 3-5 years, the midge hatch in the early part of the year has been a highlight for many anglers.

The weather for the next several days looks very promising. Due to the cold temps over the past week, it will be best to stay at lower elevations to avoid iced up stream sections.
