About Us – Dakota Angler & Outfitter

Black Hills Fly Fishing, Since 1996

Full-service fly shop and guide service in Rapid City—just minutes from Rapid Creek and a short drive to Spearfish, Castle, Spring, and Box Elder Creeks.

Our Story

Dakota Angler & Outfitter opened its doors in 1996 to serve a growing community of fly anglers exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota. In the early days, the shop focused on connecting local anglers with quality gear and local knowledge for the area’s surprisingly rich trout waters. Over time, it became a gathering place—somewhere anglers came not just to buy flies, but to share stories, tie patterns, and plan their next trip.

When Hans Stephenson took ownership in 2006, he brought new energy and a passion for education and conservation. Under his leadership, the shop expanded its guide service, built a robust online store, and launched a library of free fly-tying videos watched by anglers around the world. The goal has always been the same: to make fly fishing approachable, fun, and connected to the unique waters of the Black Hills.

Today, Dakota Angler & Outfitter continues to blend small-shop hospitality with the selection and service of a modern outfitter. Whether you’re stepping into waders for the first time or chasing your next personal best, we’re here to help you get the most out of your time on the water.
