The warmer weather has us all ready to get out and spend some time on the streams. The best options will be our lower elevation streams like Rapid Creek In-town and Spearfish In-town. Get out and take advantage of it!
Nymphing has been the best tactic as of late and using smaller flies has been the ticket to success for us. We are hoping we can get some more consistent midge hatches as we get into March. We should also see some Baetis starting to pick up in the next few weeks as well.
Use some larger nymphs to help get down in the larger pools and pockets, trail it up with your favorite midge pattern. Some of our go-to patterns are purple zebra midges, bling midges 18-22’s, Pearl Jams, Waltz Jigs, Perdigones, San Juans, and Mop Flies.
Dave has been getting out and having good success, His biggest tip for this time of year is not to be afraid of small tippet!
