No major changes to report. Check out our Instagram page for frequent updates. Rapid, Castle, and Spearfish Creeks are the best stream fishing options in the Black Hills. Spring Creek flows are down and it's best to give that fishery a break. Some options will be available on Box Elder Creek above Nemo. We will see high temperatures head back into the high 80s and low 90s over the coming days, keep an eye on water temps and avoid fishing streams with water temperatures above 67-68 degrees.
Hatches of PMDs continue to be the most common hatch throughout the day on most streams. We are still seeing a few Caddis hatching on most streams. Trico mayflies are hatching on Rapid Creek in town in the early morning. Spinner fall will be around 6:30 or 7:00am. One big development is the number of grasshoppers we are starting to see. Hoppers are thick along many parts of Rapid Creek and lower Spearfish Creek. Hopper fishing has been getting better by the day. Late in the evening fish are keying in on small summer Baetis and Pale Evening duns.
For nymph fishing try Tungsten Split Case PMD nymphs, Rio's French Dip, Jig Hare's Ears, and tungsten zebra midges. Also peacock green perdigons have been deadly this past week.
If you need a break from trout fishing, break out your pontoon boat or float tube and head to the prairie. Dams just east of town on the prairie are fishing well for largemouths, bluegills, perch, and even a few pike. Carp fishing is picking up as well on Angostura and Belle Fourche reservoirs. Especially as grasshoppers start to show up in bigger numbers.
