Black Hills Fishing Report April 9 2015

Fishing in the Hills continues to get better and better! Dry fly fishing has been great on Rapid Creek, Spearfish Creek, Castle Creek, and most all of our local streams. Little Black Stoneflies have been my bug of choice, but there are also BWO's and Midges hatching as well. A size 18 Black and Dun F-Fly will get the job done for most all of the hatches right now. Rapid Creek below Pactola is currently at 90 cfs, and those flows will continue until Monday. After Monday, they will be dropped to 20 cfs so they can complete the dam work on Canyon Lake. The bugs will still come off after the drop in flows, the fish will just be a little pickier, especially in the basin. Rapid Creek in town has been good with larger nymphs - all the usual jig paraphernalia, as well as Killer Bugs in a size 12 or 14 have been getting it done. Shaun has been fishing streamers in town and doing great, so that's always another option. Castle Creek above and below Deerfield has been pretty darn good as well! Below the dam the fish have been eating BWO's and Stones, and above the lake has been good nymphing. The rainbows are starting to run out of the lake, so there's a good chance of catching some pretty large fish out of a pretty small creek. Spearfish Creek throughout it's entirety is fishing well, but it is a bit high. In town the fish are looking up, but the canyon has been mostly a nymphing game. The water is a bit off color, so larger, bright nymphs like G-String worms, UV Czechs, and big jigs have been the flies of choice over the past week or so. Overall, the fishing has been great as we move our way into spring!
