Black Hills Fishing Report 9/7/12
Fishing Overview:
Weather will warm up over the weekend into Monday, before returning to the 70's Tuesday. Rapid, Castle, and Spearfish Creeks continue to offer the best fishing. Blue Winged Olives, PMDs, PEDs, Midges, and Caddis are hatching throughout the afternoon. BWOs and PMDs hatches are creating the best chances for dry fly action. The Trico hatch remains strong on Rapid Creek through Rapid City. The cooler nights have caused the spinner fall to be a little later in the morning. Hoppers are working fairly well, but we aren't seeing the same numbers of grasshoppers that we did in 2009-2011. Other terrestrials have remained productive. Ants, beetles, and crickets have continued to work.
There haven't been many reports from Black Hills trout lakes, but I had a chance to fish Sylvan Lake on Thursday. The water was clear and the fish were aggressively slurping callibaetis spinners on the surface. A kick boat or pontoon on Sylvan provides great access to the fishery, but I did relatively well from shore. I caught fish on both the spinner patterns on top and a callibaetis nymph pattern fished on a steady retrieve.
