Black Hills Fall Brown Trout

Rapid Creek

In Town – A few browns are still finishing up spawning, but the ones that are done are looking to put on some weight before the winter comes. Lots of fish being caught on smaller midge larvae, Tungsten Psycho Nymphs, Tung Teasers, Two Bit Hookers, Hot Spot Pheasant Tails, and pink and orange scuds. A few midges hatching on the warmer days, target these fish with small parachute adams, Morgan's Midges, Eric's Midges, and small F-Flies. Smaller streamers such as Sculpzilla's, Slumpbusters, and Home Invaders are working to target the bigger fish. Below Pactola – Lots of fish coming up to great PMD hatches in the afternoons, but this won't last long. Get out and hit some of the best dry fly fishing of the year! Small PMD Vis-A-Duns, Sparkle Duns, Comparaduns, and Brook's Sprout Emergers are working well to imitate these bugs. A few Baetis and Midges still hanging around too, but the fish are picking out the slightly larger PMD's for the most part. Good nymphs are UV Czechs, Tungsten Split Case BWO, Two Bit Hookers, Tung Teasers, San Juan Worms, Bubble Back Midges, and UV Midge Larvae. Throw big articulated streamers to hook some of the bigger fish! Streamers such as Boogiemen, Dungeons, Home Invaders, and Bottom's Up are working well to catch some of the largest fish in the system. Silver City – A few browns are moving out of the lake to spawn, but haven't made it up very high yet. Fish between the fire station and the lake for the best success, using the same big streamers as below Pactola.

Spearfish Creek

Fishing remains good in the canyon and in town, but get out and fish the canyon before cold weather hits! Small BWO nymphs, such as Tungsten Split Case BWO, and the T Ready Baetis nymph make great lead flies, along with North Fork Specials and Red Fox Squirrel Nymphs. Bubble Back midges, UV Midge Larvae, and Two Bit Hookers are awesome bottom flies for the canyon and in town both. In town, some of the bigger nymphs are working, like bigger North Fork Specials, San Juan Worms, big Red Fox Squirrels, and Pheasant Tails and Hare's Ears are producing good numbers of fish in town.

Lakes

The fish are getting ready to go deep for the winter, but can still be caught with sinking and sink-tip lines. Use small streamers such as Mini Leeches, Wooly buggers, Slumpbusters, and Zonkers. Bigger Prince Nymphs, Hare's Ears, and Pheasant Tails are also producing good numbers of fish. The window of opportunity is closing fast on the lakes, so get out and stick some fish before they freeze!
