Black Hills Fishing Report - 12/11/2021

We're into full winter fishing mode here in the Black Hills, but that doesn't mean there's not good fishing to be had! Rapid Creek below Pactola, Rapid Creek in town, and Spearfish Creek have been fishing quite well.

This time of year you might find a few fish rising to midges here and there, but nymph fishing will be the most productive method. Once you find fish, you can usually catch a number of them out of one spot. With the cooler water temps and low flows, they are going to be in the slower, deeper water for the most part.

Small midge patterns and little BWO nymphs will pick up the most fish now, but you can get a fair number of fish to eat a larger weight fly as well. For your lead fly, try a Blowtorch, Jig Pheasant Tail, Soft Spot, Czech Princess, or Assassin in size 12-16 depending on the water depth and speed. For droppers you can catch fish on a lot of different colors of midges but black, purple, and olive are pretty consistent bets in size 18-20. Split Back BWOs and Two Bit Hookers in 18-20 are good dropper patterns as well.
